Biography
C. Thomas Howell is an American actor, director and musician who made his film debut in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) and got his breakthrough as Ponyboy Curtis in The Outsiders (1983), a performance that won him a Young Artist Award. Starring parts followed in Tank (1984), Grandview, U.S.A. (1984), Red Dawn (1984), Secret Admirer (1985) and The Hitcher (1986), though the controversy over the satire Soul Man (1986) harmed his standing as a leading man. In the 1990s he took leads in Side Out (1990), That Night (1992) and Gettysburg (1993), and main television roles on Kindred: The Embraced and Amazon. Later work includes Gods and Generals (2003), Hidalgo (2004), a main part on Southland, The Amazing Spider-Man (2012), Woodlawn (2015) and voice roles in superhero animated films. He also appeared in Obliterated (2023) and Reagan (2024), and he makes music as Tommy Howell.

Howell landed the part of Ponyboy Curtis, the lead, in The Outsiders, Francis Ford Coppola's 1983 film adaptation of S. E. Hinton's novel. He was 15 when he was cast in 1981.

Howell made his directorial debut with Pure Danger, a 1996 direct-to-video release that he also starred in. Teri Ann Linn and comic Carrot Top appeared in it as well.
