Plot summary
Alice Bloom is a young girl living on Long Island in 1961. Across the street lives Sheryl O'Connor, an older neighbor whom Alice studies from her bedroom window and imitates in every detail she can manage, from perfume to the records Sheryl plays. Alice notices how much affection Sheryl receives from her father, affection Alice does not get at home. When Alice goes bowling with friends, they mock her, and her attention stays on Sheryl, who arrives with a group of young men. Sheryl turns them away, then meets Rick, the boy working the counter, and an attraction forms between them. Alice's friends doubt that she truly knows the girl she admires.
