Plot summary
In Dallas, Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson and Lady Bird Johnson, his wife, welcome President John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Kennedy. Four years earlier, Johnson led the Senate as Majority Leader, pushing colleagues to back his legislation. Texas Senator Ralph Yarborough will not endorse a presidential campaign Johnson has not declared, favoring Kennedy instead, whose primary wins gather support. Robert F. Kennedy asks Johnson directly if he intends to run; Johnson says no, yet campaign signs appear and his advisors want him to announce. At the convention Kennedy secures the nomination and offers Johnson the vice presidency. The two win the 1960 election narrowly, and in office the president's circle works to block Johnson's influence.
