Plot summary
Michael Ryan is finishing his junior year of high school, and on the last day he finds an anonymous love letter in his locker. He is fixated on Deborah Anne Fimple, the class beauty, and when his friend Roger Despard reads the letter aloud to his friends, Roger convinces him that she is the writer. At a party that night, Michael repeats the letter's phrases to Deborah, and she does not respond the way he hoped. Afterward, Michael's friend Toni persuades him to write an anonymous letter of his own to Deborah; she rewrites it before it is passed on, and the letters go astray, spreading mix-ups through both families.

- In 2016 the Puerto Rican film Vasos de papel, produced and directed by Eduardo "Transfor" Ortiz, was found to be an unauthorized, almost-exact copy of Secret Admirer after critic Orlando Maldonado wrote an article comparing four sequences from each film.
- Confronted over the copying, Ortiz first said there were only "certain similarities between one film and the other, not plagiarism", then reversed himself hours later in a radio interview, saying he "had done something terribly wrong" and apologizing to his cast and crew.
- Singer-songwriter Natalia Lugo, the copied film's lead actress in what was her acting debut, condemned it on Facebook and described the embarrassment she felt when she saw Secret Admirer and understood how she and the rest of the cast and crew had been duped.
