Plot summary

The first invasion ended when the Martians proved unable to survive the bacteria in human blood. Two years on, a town holds silent refugees. In Washington, George Herbert notices a signal on the radio that he last heard during the first attack. He tells Major Kramer and the scientists with him that his research points to the aliens building a wormhole between Earth and Mars. A fleet of fighter jets strikes at Mars. George returns for his son Alex and finds a Tripod outside the house, which abducts the boy. He escapes to an abandoned city, where he wakes to see Pete fleeing a Tripod. George steps into the machine's path and comes to inside it with Pete.
