Plot summary
Monroe Clark leaves the Midwest for a summer of work in California. Wiley Hunter drives him from the airport to the house of his uncle Max, who gives him pay or quit notices to deliver and wants him back by six. One notice carries the name Zack Barnes. Delivering it brings Monroe to a British flight attendant who has just been with Zack, and then to a bookmaker who throws his suitcase into the ocean. Samantha recovers the suitcase from the water. Wiley introduces Monroe to beach volleyball, and Monroe misses his deadline. Max says he will forgive the lapse if Monroe evicts Zack. In a bar, Monroe finds Zack, and Zack's old volleyball partner Rollo Vincent mocks him, which sets off a fight.
