Plot summary
Gene Michaels and Rob Konigsberg have not seen Phil Stepler in years. Phil invites them to what he calls an engagement party, though his real reason is different: he has cancer and wants one last trip with the two of them. Gene and Rob have their own history, since Gene once took Rob's girlfriend, and the two men are not talking to each other. Phil tells them about his illness and about his wish, to travel to Los Angeles and be a contestant on a game show. Both men agree to make the drive, and along the way the three meet Mary Klinglitch, a kind-hearted wild woman.
