Plot summary
The SS Poseidon is a luxury cruise ship sailing from Cape Town to Sydney. Mike Rogo, a sea marshal, is posted aboard to look for anything suspicious. Four terrorists have brought two bombs on board, and on New Year's Eve one of them tears a hole in the hull. Water floods one side and the ship rolls over and capsizes, trapping passengers and crew. A priest, Bishop August Schmidt, collects a small band of survivors, among them Richard Clarke and his family, the ship's doctor Ballard and the British agent Suzanne Harrison. The hotel manager urges the people in the ballroom to wait for rescue, and most of them stay. The group heads through the upside down vessel toward the opening the bomb made.
