Plot summary
George Herbert, an astronomer, his wife Felicity and their son Alex are getting ready to leave for Washington, D.C. for their tenth wedding anniversary. Alex notices a meteorite entering the atmosphere, and George is summoned to work to look into it; Felicity and Alex head for the capital without him. On the drive a meteorite comes down; an alien walker climbs out of the crater and opens fire on the onlookers. George only just gets away. With the invasion spreading, he decides to reach his brother Matt in Hopewell first, then press on to Washington, D.C., which rumor says has taken the worst of it. He falls in with Sergeant Kerry Williams, the only man left from his unit, and Lieutenant Samuelson, who scorns them as cowards.
