Plot summary
After the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Imperial Japanese Navy has taken large stretches of the Pacific. To change the war's course, a United States carrier group takes position off Midway Atoll and prepares to spring a trap on the advancing fleet. Ensign Norman Vandivier and radioman Lee Keaney fly with a Dauntless dive bomber squadron from the USS Enterprise. Enemy fire damages their aircraft and forces them into the sea. A Consolidated PBY Catalina under Lieutenant Bennett is sent out to look for survivors of the battle, its crew scanning the water while Rear Admiral R.A. Spruance and his officers plan the second day's attacks.

- Writer-director Mike Phillips spent 15 years working to adapt the real-life story of Midway into a film, driven by a close connection to the family of Ensign Ramsay, a pilot who fought in the battle.
- Cinematographer Jason Newfield filmed the stranded sailors from camera platforms mounted on life preservers, a dinghy and a yacht, and got three views of the men in the water: from a drone directly overhead, at water level and underwater.
- To keep the screenplay authentic, the filmmakers used original after-action reports written by Lt. Richard Halsey Best, Lt. W. Earl Gallaher, Captain George Murray and Admiral Raymond A. Spruance.
- Two full-scale models were built for the film: the main cockpit section of the SBD Dauntless dive bomber and a mock-up of the interior cockpit and radio station of the PBY Catalina.
