Plot summary
Charlotte Fielding, a free-spirited haberdasher, turns twenty-two with a birthday dinner at the Manhattan restaurant of Will Keane, a successful restaurateur and confirmed womanizer. Her grandmother introduces them, and Will learns that Charlotte's mother was Katy, a woman he once dated who died in a car crash soon after Charlotte was born. He asks Charlotte to make a hat for a benefit dinner he plans to attend, and when she delivers it to his apartment, he invites her to come with him, claiming his date had stood him up. They get to know each other that evening and become lovers. Over breakfast on his terrace the next morning, Will tells her their relationship has no future; Charlotte says she knows, and that a heart condition will kill her.
