Plot summary
In 1462, the prince Vlad Dracula leaves his wife Elisabeta to fight the Ottoman Turks. A false report of his death reaches the castle, Elisabeta takes her own life, and a priest declares her soul damned. Dracula renounces God, thrusts his sword into the cross in his chapel, and drinks the blood it releases. In 1897, Jonathan Harker, a solicitor, travels to Transylvania to complete the sale of London properties to Count Dracula, who imprisons him after seeing a photograph of Harker's fiancée, Mina Murray. While Harker is away, Mina stays in London with her friend Lucy Westenra, who has accepted a proposal from Lord Arthur Holmwood. A violent storm washes a ship of dead sailors ashore, and Lucy begins sleepwalking. Her doctor, Jack Seward, sends for his old mentor, Professor Abraham Van Helsing.

- Coppola hired a standard visual effects team, but when they told him that what he wanted was impossible without modern digital technology he disagreed and fired them, replacing them with his son Roman Coppola; every visual effect in the film was then achieved on set and in camera.
- The director kept Oldman isolated from the rest of the cast, to the point that all the vampire hunters lived on one property and Oldman on another; the others met him for the first time on set during rehearsals, after which they would not see him again until filming.
- The makeup was taxing: for the elderly Dracula, Oldman spent nearly seven hours in the makeup chair, then after ten hours on the set spent another hour and a half having it removed.
- Christian Slater was offered the role of Jonathan Harker but turned it down, a decision he later said he regretted.
- Eiko Ishioka's costume design created a new image for the Count, freeing him for the first time from the black cape and evening wear the character had been associated with ever since Bela Lugosi's portrayal in 1931.
- While preparing to play Dracula, Oldman took lessons with a singing teacher for one specific purpose: to drive his voice a full octave lower than it naturally sat.
