Plot summary
Stanley Milgram, a social psychologist, wants to understand how far ordinary people will obey an authority figure. At Yale in 1961 he stages an experiment: a man is strapped into a chair in one room, and in the next room volunteers believe they are sending him shocks when a person in a lab coat tells them to continue. The man begs to be released, and most of the volunteers continue anyway. The trial of Adolf Eichmann airs on American television, and Milgram's inquiry into conformity, conscience and free will strikes the scientific community and popular culture alike, drawing praise in some circles and accusations of manipulation in others. He meets Alexandra, called Sasha, who becomes his wife.

- Director Michael Almereyda only became interested in Stanley Milgram when his girlfriend took a class on the psychologist; after reading Milgram's Obedience to Authority, he instantly saw how filmable the subject was.
- Michael Almereyda had Milgram break the fourth wall and talk to the camera after watching films in which the real Milgram addressed the camera, which reminded him of Rod Serling and Alfred Hitchcock.
