Plot summary
Ralph and Scott hitchhike home from college and reach town on Easter morning, while their families are at a sunrise service by the lake. Ralph's mother Ev and his younger sister Beth are amused by the pair's shout across the glen; Scott's mother Jessie and his father Cliff are embarrassed. That day the two drive Scott's older brother Alden, a Marine, to the bus depot as he ships out to Vietnam. Scott accuses Alden of being afraid to go, and the brothers fight. Weeks later they return for Beth's high school graduation, where Ralph's flunking out of college comes to light and leaves him eligible for the draft. Ralph and Scott plan to spend the summer traveling in their van.
