Plot summary
Two hundred years after Ellen Ripley died on Fiorina 161, the United Systems Military breeds aliens aboard the ship USM Auriga. Scientists grow a clone from blood samples taken in her previous life and remove the queen embryo she carries. The clone, called Ripley 8, keeps Ellen Ripley's memories along with traits from the queen, and she senses the aliens around her. The mercenary ship Betty docks to sell kidnapped humans in stasis, and the military means them as hosts for the aliens. Ripley 8 meets the crew, among them Annalee Call, a newcomer to the Betty. When the aliens break out of their enclosures, Ripley 8 and the Betty's crew head for the Betty to get off the Auriga.

- Winona Ryder nearly drowned at age 12 and had stayed out of the water since, so the scene was hard for her. She thought a body double would be too obvious because of hair length, so she filmed it and felt anxiety on the first day.
- For the underwater scene, Stage 16 at Fox Studios was rebuilt into a 36-by-45-meter tank 4.5 meters deep holding 548,000 gallons of water, rather than moving the crew to San Diego, which would have been too costly for a single scene. Because of the aquatic filming, being able to swim was a prerequisite for cast and crew.
- Jean-Pierre Jeunet wanted the human/Alien hybrid to have genitalia resembling a mix of male and female sexes, but 20th Century Fox was uncomfortable and he changed his mind, feeling that "even for a Frenchman, it's too much". The genitalia were removed during post-production using digital effects.
- Trainspotting director Danny Boyle was the producers' first choice to direct, but he passed and made A Life Less Ordinary instead, saying he did not consider himself ready for the amount of effects needed. Peter Jackson was also approached but declined, and Bryan Singer was approached in 1995 after The Usual Suspects.
- Alien Resurrection was the first Alien movie not made in England. Sigourney Weaver made that call because she thought the earlier films' travel schedules had worn out the crew.
- Blue Sky Studios made the first CGI Aliens on film. Impressed by its CGI cockroaches in Joe's Apartment, Jeunet and Pitof hired the company for 30 to 40 shots of CGI Aliens, used when the creatures' legs were in frame.
