Plot summary
Gemma Dillard is an awkward thirteen-year-old who lives with her grandfather on a farm in the Texas Panhandle. Her mother, who gave birth to Gemma while she was still a teenager, is married and works as a hair stylist in Fort Worth, and she can provide for her daughter. She visits the farm and offers Gemma a place with her in the city. Gemma moves to Fort Worth, where the city is a shock at first, though she adjusts to her new surroundings. She meets Rory Torrance, a twenty-one-year-old man with an intellectual disability. The two play and spend time together, imagining that they are married.

- Emilio Estevez was initially slated to play Rory in Square Dance, but when the chance came to direct, write and star in Wisdom he left the project and passed the script to his friend Rob Lowe, who took one-twentieth of his usual salary for the part.
- To convincingly play the intellectually disabled Rory, Rob Lowe took adult special-needs classes and worked four days with a speech therapist to perfect the slurred manner of speaking he used for his audition.
- Gregory Peck was initially cast as Grandpa Dillard in Square Dance, but he dropped out of the film and was replaced by Jason Robards.
