Biography

Jeffrey Jones is an American actor who came to film from the stage, starting at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis after Tyrone Guthrie recruited him, and going on to work in London, on Broadway and Off-Broadway. He began taking small film and television parts in the 1970s, and his deadpan playing of characters in unusual situations, often for comic effect, shaped the roles he became known for. Miloš Forman cast him as Emperor Joseph II in Amadeus (1984), a performance that earned him a Golden Globe nomination, and he played Edward R. Rooney in Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986) and Charles Deetz in Beetlejuice (1988), beginning a run of collaborations with Tim Burton that included Ed Wood (1994) and Sleepy Hollow (1999). His other credits include The Hunt for Red October (1990) and The Devil's Advocate (1997), and on television he played A. W. Merrick in Deadwood, a role he later reprised in Deadwood: The Movie.
