William 'Billy' Benedict
Biography
William Benedict was an American actor remembered for his youthful screen roles and for playing Whitey in the Bowery Boys series. After acting in school plays in Haskell, Oklahoma, he went to Hollywood and made his first film, $10 Raise (1935), with Edward Everett Horton. He was soon typecast as newsboys, messengers, and other juvenile characters. In 1939 Universal added him to its Little Tough Guys series, a rival to the Dead End Kids, which led to the East Side Kids features and then to the Bowery Boys, where he remained as Whitey until the end of 1951. Among his other films were The Ox-Bow Incident and Ed Wood's Bride of the Monster (1955). He continued playing messengers and news vendors into his sixties, while also working in television commercials and on shows such as The Andy Griffith Show.
