Plot summary
The Perennials, a college band, have two rival trumpeters in Danny O'Neill and Hank Taylor, both of them still enrolled after seven years of failed exams. Ellen Miller works for a debt collector, and she comes to one of the band's performances to serve both men a summons. Danny and Hank talk her into managing the Perennials instead, and her business sense brings the band more engagements. Both men court her, and each of them tries to get the other fired from the band. A rival bandleader, tired of losing bookings to the Perennials, asks Ellen to handle his own engagements.

- Johnny Mercer and Artie Shaw wrote "Love of My Life" in one day over lunch at Mercer's house; Mercer made Shaw wait three weeks before playing it for the studio, saying that if they knew it had been written over lunch they would not think it was any good.
- The comic duet "I Ain't Hep to That Step But I'll Dig It" was the last of Fred Astaire's duets to be filmed entirely in one take. Paulette Goddard, whose dance experience was limited, said they did it "just once, one Saturday morning" and that she could not have done it again.
- Artie Shaw, who played himself in the film, said in an interview shortly before his death that Second Chorus put him off acting.
- Fred Astaire's trumpet playing in the film was dubbed by Bobby Hackett, and Burgess Meredith's was dubbed by Artie Shaw's bandsman Billy Butterfield.
