Plot summary
Daniel Forrester IV is a wealthy young bachelor, sheltered and bedridden, whose aunts doubt his constitution. When his draft notice arrives he is elated, and he reports to Fort Merritt in Texas for basic training with his chauffeur Ollie and his gardener Stan. Daniel excels there, but Stan and Ollie are hardly soldiers, and their antics annoy their drill sergeant, not least because of Stan's pet crow, Penelope. Ginger Hammond, who develops photographs at the fort, takes notice of Daniel. Sergeant Hippo is jealous, and Stan and Ollie, worried about Daniel's health, try to discourage Ginger from her interest in him.
