Biography

Al Bridge was an American character actor whose small roles filled more than 270 films released between 1931 and 1954. Born in Pennsylvania and raised in Philadelphia, he began in vaudeville as a teenager. He entered film in 1930 by helping write the comedy short Her Hired Husband, then co-wrote the Western God's Country and the Man and appeared in it. For a quarter century he was a familiar face in B-Westerns, comedies and dramas. Westerns were a specialty, especially the Hopalong Cassidy series, where he played corrupt sheriffs and henchmen. In the 1940s he joined Preston Sturges' informal stock company and appeared in ten of the eleven movies Sturges wrote and directed. His best-known part was the chain-gang boss in charge of Joel McCrea in Sullivan's Travels (1941), and he went against type as a sympathetic lawyer in The Miracle of Morgan's Creek (1944). From 1950 he appeared on television, including The Gene Autry Show and The Range Rider.
