Biography

Burgess Meredith was an American actor and filmmaker who worked in radio, theater, film, and television. Born in Cleveland in 1907, he died in 1997. He joined Eva Le Gallienne's Civic Repertory Theatre and made his Broadway debut in Romeo and Juliet in 1930. His stage success in Winterset led to his 1936 film debut, and he won praise for Of Mice and Men (1939) and The Story of G.I. Joe (1945). Later audiences knew him for The Twilight Zone and for playing the Penguin in Batman from 1966 to 1968, as well as Mickey Goldmill in Rocky (1976), Rocky II (1979), Rocky III (1982), and Rocky V (1990). He earned Academy Award nominations for The Day of the Locust (1975) and Rocky, won an Emmy for Tail Gunner Joe, and directed The Man on the Eiffel Tower (1949). He appeared in Foul Play (1978), Clash of the Titans (1981), Grumpy Old Men (1993), and Grumpier Old Men (1995).
