Plot summary

Marshal Matt Morgan's Cherokee wife and their son Petey are riding home from a visit to her father when two drunken cowboys assault and kill her. She leaves a deep whip cut on one man's cheek, and the boy gets away on one of their horses. That horse carries a silver-trimmed saddle, which Morgan knows as Craig Belden's, the cattle baron who controls Gun Hill. Morgan rides there to give back the saddle and ask which of Belden's hands was involved. Belden says that Rick and another man, Lee Smithers, rode through Morgan's town that day. Belden will not give up his son to the marshal, and Morgan vows to take Rick out of Gun Hill on the last train that night.
