Plot summary

Cattleman Brill Austin watches farmers settle on land he knows cannot be farmed, and he lets them draw water from his springs even though the supply will not carry their crops or their stock. Judge Ben Curry brought the settlers in, promising that wells would find plenty of water, and the local ranchers know the promise is empty. Curry's partner, town butcher Pete Gore, has men steal Austin's cattle and skin them on Austin's own range so the meat cannot be traced, then hangs the beef in his shop. Among the newcomers are former lawyer Franklin Brambull and his daughter Priscilla and son Larry. Curry arranges for Brambull to serve as prosecuting attorney in Olympia City, expecting him to side with the settlers against the cattlemen.
