Sterling Holloway

Biography

Sterling Holloway was an American actor who appeared in more than a hundred films and many television shows. Born in Cedartown, Georgia, in 1905, he left for New York City as a teenager and studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. He performed with the Theatre Guild and in The Garrick Gaieties, then moved to Hollywood in 1926, where his first film was the silent picture The Battling Kangaroo. His bushy red hair and foggy voice suited comedy, but he also played a medic in the acclaimed A Walk in the Sun (1945). At Disney he voiced Mr. Stork in Dumbo and the adult Flower in Bambi. He later became the Cheshire Cat in Alice in Wonderland and Kaa the snake in The Jungle Book. He was Roquefort the mouse in The Aristocats and voiced Winnie the Pooh in featurettes through 1977. In 1991 he became the first voice performer honored as a Disney Legend.

Behind the award
In 1991, Sterling Holloway became a Disney Legend. He was the first to be given the award for voice work.
A role that slipped away
In 1982, Holloway tried out for the role of the comic book character Garfield, but the part went to Lorenzo Music instead.
Early training
Holloway left Georgia at age fifteen in 1920 to attend the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City, where he befriended Spencer Tracy.
First role
As a late teenager, Holloway traveled with The Shepherd of the Hills stock company, putting on one-night shows in many parts of the American West.
Beyond film
Holloway was a talented singer who introduced the song "Manhattan" in 1925, and the next year he sang "Mountain Greenery".
A change of course
Holloway joined the United States Army in 1942, at 37, during World War II, and was part of the Special Services. He contributed to a show, "Hey Rookie," that ran nine months and brought in $350,000 for the Army Relief Fund.
