Plot summary
A threat from Professor James Moriarty brings Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson to New York City. There Holmes meets Irene Adler again; she now sings in a music hall, and her young son Scott has been kidnapped. Moriarty sends Holmes a note saying the police will soon ask for his help with a crime, that he must refuse, and that the boy will die if he gives a reason for refusing. The NYPD wants to know how the gold exchange vault at a New York bank was emptied overnight; the loss is secret because Italy and Germany are due to trade in three days. Holmes turns the case down to protect the child, then sets out to look for Scott himself.
