Biography

Bing Crosby was an American singer and actor who became one of the first multimedia stars, leading in record sales, radio ratings and film grosses across a career that lasted from 1926 to 1977. Born in Tacoma in 1903 and raised in Spokane, he started with Paul Whiteman's orchestra and the Rhythm Boys before his solo radio debut in 1931. He won the Academy Award for Best Actor for Going My Way (1944) and was nominated for The Bells of St. Mary's (1945) and The Country Girl. He was the top box office attraction for five straight years from 1944 to 1948, and his films included Holiday Inn (1942), White Christmas (1954), High Society (1956) and the Road to films with Bob Hope, such as Road to Singapore (1940) and Road to Morocco (1942). He also hosted Kraft Music Hall and produced television series.

  1. Behind the award

    For his work in Going My Way, Crosby took home the Academy Award for Best Actor. A nomination followed for The Bells of St. Mary's, the sequel, making him the first of six actors nominated twice as the same character.

  2. About the name

    A neighbor, Valentine Hobart, gave him the nickname "Bingo from Bingville" around 1910, after a comic in the local paper that the young Harry liked. Later, Bingo was shortened to Bing.

  3. First role

    In 1917, Crosby spent a summer as a property boy at Spokane's Auditorium, where he watched Al Jolson and was spellbound by his ad-libbing and Hawaiian song parodies. Crosby later called Jolson's delivery "electric".

  4. Languages

    During World War II, Crosby appeared live before American troops who had fought in the European Theater. Using written scripts, he learned German pronunciation and read propaganda broadcasts meant for German forces.

  5. Behind the camera

    Crosby's company, Bing Crosby Productions, produced the medical dramas Ben Casey and Breaking Point, the military comedy Hogan's Heroes, and Slattery's People.
