Plot summary
Michael Shayne works as a private investigator, and his fiancée Joanne La Marre sings for a living. The two are at their hotel when a scream comes from one of the rooms, and the maid, Emily, finds two dead people inside. One is the producer Louis Lathrop, who owned the hotel and the theater beside it; the other is Desiree Vance, one of his actresses. Both lie in medieval costumes, and Lathrop also wears the head of a dog costume. Police investigator Pierson arrives, and the hotel manager, Hal Brennon, tells him that the outfits come from Sweethearts of Paris, the one successful show Lathrop staged years before. Desiree had been its leading lady, and Carlo Ralph had played a character called Beppo the Dog.
