Plot summary
Ty Ty Walden farms cotton in the Georgia backwoods with his sons Buck and Shaw and his daughter Darlin' Jill, and Buck's wife Griselda lives with them. For fifteen years Ty Ty has dug holes across the property, certain his grandfather buried gold there, and the fields have gone untended. His friend Pluto Swint, who is running for sheriff, tells him the albino Dave Dawson can find the gold with a divining rod, and Ty Ty takes Dawson to the farm. Ty Ty's daughter Rosamund is married to Will, a millworker whose mill has closed. Buck is jealous of Griselda's old beau, Will. Another son, Jim Leslie, a wealthy cotton broker, is estranged from the family.

- Philip Yordan was officially given credit for the screenplay, but Ben Maddow claimed he wrote it; Maddow was blacklisted for suspected communist activities during the 1950s Red Scare, and working without credit was the only way he could successfully submit screenplays.
- After decades of neglect the film was restored by the UCLA Film and Television Archive under the supervision of the restorer Robert Gitt, and as part of that restoration Yordan's name was removed from the main titles and replaced by Maddow's, although it does not appear on most current releases.
- When the film was first released, audiences under 18 years of age were prohibited from viewing what were perceived to be numerous sexy scenes throughout, although in recent decades the film's scandalous reputation has diminished.
- Anthony Mann said everyone had told him it was not possible to make a film from the Caldwell book, about the kookiest he had ever seen, and that for the first time he rehearsed with the actors for about three weeks before shooting so that they would become a family.
