Plot summary
Adam White hopes to write for the Chronicle and meets its editor, William Shrike, in a bar where he is talking with Shrike's wife, Florence. Florence says Adam can write and deserves a chance, and Shrike tells him to prove it. Adam tells his girlfriend Justy Sargeant about the job but keeps quiet about his father, Lassiter, who is serving twenty-five years in prison for killing Adam's mother and her lover. The Chronicle assigns him the Miss Lonelyhearts column, answering readers' letters about their troubles. Reporter Ned Gates had wanted that column, and Frank Goldsmith mocks the people who write in. Shrike turns down Adam's request for other work and requires him to visit the letter writers in person. Adam picks out a letter from Fay Doyle and sets off to meet her.
