Plot summary
Jim Wilson is a city detective who uses violence to get information out of suspects. His chief, Brawley, warns him to cool off. After Wilson ignores the warning and beats a suspect, Brawley sends him upstate to Westham, a cold mountain town, to help the local sheriff with the murder of a young girl. The dead girl's father, Walter Brent, wants to kill the man who did it. Wilson teams up with him, and the two follow the man through the snow.

- Bernard Herrmann's score for On Dangerous Ground included a sequence he later reused as the opening theme song of the 1957 television series Have Gun Will Travel. Herrmann's work here also foreshadows his later score for Alfred Hitchcock's 1959 thriller North by Northwest.
- To symbolize blind Mary Malden's isolation and loneliness, Bernard Herrmann wrote for the six- or seven-stringed viola d'amore, whose extra strings vibrate in sympathetic resonance; it can be heard much of the time she is on screen. Virginia Majewski performed it and received a screen credit for her contribution.
