Walter Sande

Biography

Walter Sande was an American character actor who spent his career in supporting film and television roles. Born in Denver, Colorado, he led his own band during college, then became musical director for a theater chain owned by 20th Century-Fox before he started acting in films in 1937. He was first noticed in serials such as The Green Hornet Strikes Again! and Sky Raiders, and won his first featured role in The Iron Claw as a comic sidekick. He later appeared in To Have and Have Not (1944), Along Came Jones (1945), The Blue Dahlia (1946) and Bad Day at Black Rock (1955), and he was a regular in science fiction films including Red Planet Mars (1952) and Invaders from Mars (1953). He played Detective Matthews in the Boston Blackie series and was a steady television presence from the late 1940s into the 1960s, on shows including The Lone Ranger, Dragnet, Perry Mason and Lost in Space.
