Plot summary
In 1912, the regulars of Harry Hope's bar and boarding house gather for whiskey and for the arrival of Hickey, a salesman who comes once a year, stands them drinks, tells them about his travels and marks Harry Hope's birthday. Larry Slade, an ex-anarchist who no longer wants anything from life, sits with Don Parritt, the young man who keeps him company. This year Hickey brings no drinks and no stories. He tells the men that their hopes are pipe dreams and that they should face reality, and they resent it.

- Robert Ryan was terminally ill with lung cancer while shooting The Iceman Cometh, which proved to be the final film role for both him and Fredric March.
- Both Marlon Brando and Gene Hackman were approached to play Hickey in the film adaptation of Eugene O'Neill's The Iceman Cometh.
- Fredric March came out of retirement to play Harry Hope; he had initially declined because the shooting schedule clashed with prostate surgery, and John Frankenheimer persuaded the producers to delay filming for months until he recovered.
- To fit O'Neill's typically four-hour play into a cinematic runtime, dialogue was trimmed for time and the character of Ed Mosher was cut entirely, with his lines given to other characters.
