Plot summary
Scott is a mounted Coast Guard officer whose sleep is broken by recurring nightmares. In them he stands in an eerie seascape among a shipwreck and skeletons, while a ghostly blonde figure beckons to him. He believes he may be going mad, and he asks Eve Geddes, a young woman employed at the shipyard that serves the Coast Guard, to marry him. Eve strongly resembles the woman of his dreams. Riding his horse along the seaside, Scott comes upon Peggy, who is married to Tod, a painter who went blind, standing near a shipwreck that juts from the sand. Their talk shows that they share the same metaphysical anxieties, and a bond grows between them. Tod, ambivalent, draws close to Scott and tests how far the two might go.

- After a preview screening for high-school and college students who were uninterested in its dark themes, director Jean Renoir spent six months re-editing The Woman on the Beach and reshooting several sections, which caused him much distress.
- Renoir chose Val Lewton as producer, but Lewton left soon after shooting began, leaving Renoir as his own producer, and the shoot went so well that he and the cast improvised on set.
