Plot summary
Cass Silver is the marshal of a small Kansas town that is about to receive its first Texas trail herds, now that the railroad has reached it. Honest John Barrett, the new saloon owner, expects a rise in business, but he and Silver share a history, and Barrett wants the marshal out of the way. Silver's deputy, Thad Anderson, rode in with one of the trail crews. He is the son of a gunfighter killed by Silver years before, and he believes his father was unarmed. Silver's fiancée, Sally, is in town as well, and a scuffle at the saloon early on leaves his eyesight damaged, which gets in the way of his work.

- The film was bought by 20th Century Fox in November 1952, which originally announced Victor Mature, Robert Wagner and Debra Paget as its stars.
- Guy Madison was meant to co-star in the film but dropped out and was replaced by Robert Stack; in early January Stack was in turn replaced by Jeffrey Hunter.
- The film was based on Verne Athanas's 1952 novel; after an early heart attack he gave up logging and began writing under the pseudonym Bill Colson.
