Plot summary
Leonora Eames finishes charm school, models clothes, and dreams of being rich. Her marriage to the multimillionaire Smith Ohlrig is no love match on his side: he wed in defiance of a psychiatrist who had predicted he would never marry and that the marriage would ruin them both. That same doctor calls Ohlrig's heart trouble psychosomatic. Ohlrig shuts Leonora away, finds fault with her, and wants her awake when he gets home at night. Told to take a vacation, she says she will leave and look for work. Penniless, she takes a place in a poor neighborhood alongside an obstetrician, Dr. Hoffman, and a pediatrician, Dr. Larry Quinada.
