Biography

Philip Bosco was an American actor who started on Broadway and won a Tony Award for playing Saunders in Lend Me a Tenor. Born in Jersey City, New Jersey, he studied drama at Catholic University and earned a Tony nomination for his 1960 debut, The Rape of the Belt. He supported major stars in revivals such as King Lear, Cyrano de Bergerac, and Twelfth Night, and appeared in Shaw plays including Major Barbara and Heartbreak House, winning Tony nominations for the latter. After Lend Me a Tenor in 1990, he returned to Broadway in An Inspector Calls (1994), The Heiress (1995), and Twelve Angry Men (2004). His films included Working Girl (1988), Children of a Lesser God (1986), The Money Pit (1986), Nobody's Fool (1994), My Best Friend's Wedding (1997), and The Savages (2007). He was a regular in the Law & Order franchise, won a Daytime Emmy in 1988, and entered the American Theater Hall of Fame in 1998.

Bosco started out in Broadway theater. His first appearance there, in The Rape of the Belt in 1960, brought him a Tony Award nomination.

Bosco left the stage in 2009, following his appearance in the City Center Encores production of Finian's Rainbow. Even so, he provided his voice for Douglas Carter Beane's 2010 play Mr. and Mrs. Fitch.
