Plot summary
In the spring of 1903, most Americans see no future for the horseless carriage beyond short trips. Horatio Nelson Jackson disagrees, wagering fifty dollars that one can carry him from coast to coast. He leaves San Francisco in a twenty-horsepower Winton that he calls the Vermont, heading for New York City. Sewall K. Crocker rides with him, and Jackson's pitbull, Bud, comes along. Jackson writes frequently to his wife, Bertha Richardson Wells, whom he calls Swipes. Two rival crews also depart from San Francisco, each determined to arrive in New York ahead of the others. Mechanical trouble plagues the car as the route turns from California into Oregon, crosses the Rocky Mountain states and reaches the Midwest.
