Plot summary
Walter Fielding, an attorney, and Anna Crowley, a classical musician, share an apartment they sublet from Max Beissart, the conductor Anna divorced. Max comes home from Europe ahead of schedule, so the two have to move. Through his realtor friend Jack Schnittman, Walter hears of a mansion listed at a small part of what it is worth. The owner, Estelle, tells them her husband Carlos has been arrested and that she must sell quickly. Anna, who finds the situation romantic, and Walter agree to buy, thinking the work of restoring the place will bring them closer. On the day they take possession, the house begins to fail: the doorway gives way, the stairs come down, sewage backs up in the pipes and the wiring burns. Contractors Art and Brad Shirk arrive and promise two weeks of work.
