Plot summary
Leopold, the orphaned third Duke of Albany, lives in 1876 New York with his uncle Millard Mountbatten and has designed a prototype elevator. The family finances are gone, so Millard wants him married to a wealthy American heiress. On the evening Leopold is to announce his bride, he catches Stuart Besser, an amateur physicist from the 21st century, photographing his study, and chases him. Both fall into a gravitational time portal, and Leopold wakes in 2001 in Stuart's Manhattan apartment. Stuart says the portal reopens on Monday and that Leopold must wait inside until then. When Stuart takes his dog out, he falls down an empty elevator shaft and is committed to a mental institution. Kate McKay, Stuart's ex-girlfriend, lives downstairs and dismisses the duke.
