Murphy Guyer
Biography
Murphy Guyer is an American actor and playwright. Born in Dover, Delaware, he spent his childhood in rural eastern Maryland and moved to New York City at nineteen to study at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts with an acting scholarship. He started out writing for stand-up comics and improv groups, then had his first play, Eden Court, staged at the Humana Festival in Louisville. The play later reached Broadway and was made into a film. His plays, often farcical or satirical, have been shown Off-Broadway and at regional theaters in several countries. The Realists and his version of The Emancipation of Valet de Chambre were each recognized among the year's best plays. In 1991 he began acting in television and film, first in a Law & Order episode, and has appeared in The Devil's Advocate (1997), Arthur (2011), and Joker (2019).

Early training
Guyer moved to New York City at nineteen on an acting scholarship to the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. He soon discovered he could write jokes and comic sketches.
Behind the camera
Guyer's first play, Eden Court, had its premiere in Louisville, Kentucky, at the Humana Festival of New American Plays in the early 1980s. It was later made into a film and produced on Broadway.
