Plot summary
Julianne Potter is a food critic in New York, and Michael O'Neal, a sportswriter in Chicago, is her lifelong friend. Years earlier the two agreed that if neither had married by twenty-eight, they would marry each other. Three weeks before that birthday, Michael calls to say that in four days he will wed Kimmy Wallace, a college student eight years younger than he is, whose father is the owner of the Chicago White Sox. The news makes Julianne realize she loves him. She goes to Chicago, meets Kimmy, and Kimmy asks her to be the maid of honor.
