Plot summary
Donald Sullivan, known as Sully, lives in North Bath, a village in New York State, as a tenant in the house of Miss Beryl, who taught him in eighth grade. He works freelance in construction and constantly sues the local contractor Carl Roebuck for unpaid wages and disability; his lawyer Wirf, who has one leg, handles the cases badly and they are thrown out. Sully flirts with Carl's wife Toby and spends his evenings at the Iron Horse Saloon playing cards. Miss Beryl's son Clive Jr., a banker, wants her to evict Sully and sell the house.

- The fictional village of North Bath is based on the real Village of Ballston Spa in Saratoga County, New York, just east of Gloversville where novelist Richard Russo grew up; the real town was overshadowed by Saratoga Springs just as North Bath is eclipsed by the fictional Schuyler Springs.
- Because Bruce Willis's fame as an action star might lure audiences in with false expectations, the film was not advertised with him and his name was kept out of the opening credits, appearing only in the closing credits.
