Plot summary
Nine-year-old Amanda Lemmon is an orphan in Manhattan. The social worker Diane Barrows looks after her and would like to adopt her, but the authorities rule her out because of her salary, her unmarried status and her job. Harry and Fanny Butkis, a couple known for collecting children through adoption, are also hoping to take Amanda in. At summer camp, Amanda meets Alyssa Callaway, a rich girl her own age who looks just like her. Alyssa's widowed father, Roger, owns the camp and runs Callaway Cellular, and he is set to marry the socialite Clarice Kensington the following month. The girls decide to trade places, and each of them gets to know the other's guardian. Sure that Roger and Diane belong together, the two arrange meetings between them, and Roger and Diane take to each other at once.
