Plot summary
Architect Peter Mitchell, cartoonist Michael Kellam and actor Jack Holden share an apartment in New York. Jack is abroad on a film shoot and has asked his roommates to hold a package for him, sent by a colleague, Paul Milner, and to keep its delivery quiet. Before the package arrives, a baby named Mary is left at their door with a note saying she is Jack's daughter, born after his time with an actress, Sylvia, during a Shakespeare production the year before. Peter and Michael assume the baby is the delivery Jack mentioned. Neither man knows how to look after her, so Peter goes out for supplies, and their landlady, Mrs. Hathaway, brings up a small box that Michael sets aside.
