Plot summary
Jon Savage teaches theater in Buffalo and is at work on a book about Bertolt Brecht. His younger sister Wendy, a playwright in New York City, gets by on temp work and has not yet seen her autobiographical plays produced. The two have kept their distance from their parents for several years; they say their father, Lenny, was abusive while they were growing up and that their mother was largely absent. Word reaches them that Lenny has grown aggressive, and then that Doris Metzger, his partner of twenty years, has died. They travel to Sun City, Arizona for the funeral and learn that Lenny is in the early stages of dementia, likely caused by Parkinson's. He cannot remain in Doris's house, a non-marriage agreement leaving him no claim on it, and the siblings disagree about what care suits him.
