Plot summary
In Flat River, Arkansas, dance instructor Shirlee Kenyon is fired for giving advice instead of lessons. Her boyfriend Steve belittles her plan to move to Chicago, so she goes alone. On the Wabash Avenue Bridge, she drops two $20 bills, climbs over the rail to retrieve one, and is pulled to safety by Jack Russell, an investigative journalist who thinks she is attempting suicide. She refuses his offer of money. At a diner, she counsels Janice, a woman whose workaholic boyfriend has stood her up again. After failed interviews, Shirlee is hired as a receptionist at a radio station. There she wanders into a studio, is mistaken for the new call-in therapist, and gives on-air advice. The program director Alan Riegert offers her a contract if she calls herself a doctor.
