Plot summary
Brenda Martin works at a children's center in the Armstrong housing projects in Dempsy, New Jersey, and lives in the neighboring town of Gannon. One evening she walks into a Dempsy emergency room with cut and bleeding hands, in shock. Detective Lorenzo Council is sent to take her statement. She says her car was stolen, then tells him that her son Cody, four years old, had been asleep in the back seat. A search begins. Brenda's brother, Danny Martin, a police officer in Gannon, brings a heavy police presence to the housing project, and residents protest the disruption. The case sharpens divisions between the two towns and within the police department. A volunteer group that searches for missing children, led by Karen Collucci, offers its help.
