Plot summary
Albert Brennaman, a clumsy man smitten with Allegra Cole, a celebrity who does business with his investment firm, hires Alex "Hitch" Hitchens, a New York date doctor who teaches men the steps of winning a woman over: catching her eye, listening well, and waiting for her to begin a kiss on a third date. Hitch falls for Sara Melas, a gossip columnist assigned to write about Allegra, and his methods do not work on her. He keeps his work to himself and calls himself a consultant. Vance Munson, a shallow man after a single night with Casey Sedgewick, Sara's best friend, asks Hitch to assist him; Hitch turns him down.
