Plot summary
Cousins Charlie Moran and Paulie Gibonni live in an Italian section of Greenwich Village, where they share expensive tastes and little money. Charlie works as a maître d'hôtel and hopes to open his own restaurant, while also paying alimony and supporting his pregnant girlfriend, Diane. Paulie waits tables, and his schemes keep landing the pair in trouble. When Paulie is caught skimming checks, he and Charlie are both fired. Out of work and in debt, Charlie reluctantly agrees to Paulie's idea of robbing a safe at a local business, and the two enlist Barney, a clock repairman and locksmith, to help.

- This film was originally planned as the first on-screen pairing of actors Robert De Niro and Al Pacino, with De Niro playing Charlie and Pacino playing Paulie, and Michael Cimino was initially slated to direct the film.
- After Rourke and Roberts signed on as the leads, Cimino wanted to finesse the screenplay with some rewriting and restructuring, but the rewriting would have taken him beyond the mandated start date for shooting, so Cimino and MGM parted ways.
- Page was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress on the strength of a role that lasts only two scenes in the whole film.
